Three Indian students die in Bochum house fire

Three Indian nationals, two women aged 25 and 27 and a 26-year-old man, died after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Bochum early on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The Indian Embassy in Berlin says all three were studying in Germany and that it is supporting their families. Police have arrested a 41-year-old resident on suspicion of murder and arson, and the investigation continues.

Alcohol ban now in force at all Deutsche Bahn stations

From today, 15 October 2026, drinking alcohol is no longer allowed at Deutsche Bahn stations across Germany, about 5,400 in total. You can still carry closed bottles, including drinks you just bought, and station cafés, bars and restaurants are exempt. Anyone caught drinking will first be asked to leave the station, and repeat cases can lead to a ban from DB premises.

Average health insurance top-up expected to stay at 2.9% in 2027

Germany’s official estimating group for statutory health insurance said on 14 October 2026 that the average additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) should stay at 2.9% in 2027. This is only a benchmark: each public insurer, such as TK or AOK, sets its own rate and can still raise it. Students with public insurance should look out for their insurer’s announcement of its 2027 rate.

Inflation rises to 3.3% as fuel prices climb

The Federal Statistical Office confirmed on 13 October 2026 that consumer prices in September were 3.3% higher than a year earlier, the highest rate since December 2023. Energy was the main driver, up 14.9%, with fuel up 37.1%. Food prices barely moved and electricity got cheaper, so students who rarely drive may feel less pressure, but it is worth reviewing your monthly budget.
