How to use the Opportunity Card calculator
- Check the basic requirements first: a degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised in your home country, and German at A1 or English at B2.
- Answer the questions about recognition, work experience, languages, age and previous stays in Germany.
- See your points and whether you reach the minimum of 6.
- If you are short, the calculator shows which steps would add points.
Understanding your result
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) lets you come to Germany for up to one year to look for a job. If your qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you count as a skilled worker and do not need points.
Otherwise you need at least 6 points. Points come from partial recognition of your qualification, work experience, German and English skills, your age, previous stays in Germany and a partner who also qualifies.
Tips and common mistakes
- Better German brings the most extra points and also improves your job chances.
- Start the recognition process (Anerkennung) early, it can take several months.
- You also need proof of financing, for example a blocked account with 1,091 euros per month.
- During the job search you may work part time, up to 20 hours a week, and do trial work.
