Understanding your result
After graduating in Germany you can get a job seeker permit for up to 18 months to find a job that matches your qualification. With a matching job you can switch to an EU Blue Card or a skilled worker permit.
For the Blue Card in 2026 the salary threshold is 50,700 euros a year, or 45,934 euros in shortage occupations and for recent graduates. Blue Card holders can get permanent residence after 27 months, or after 21 months with German at B1 level.
Tips and common mistakes
- Apply for your next permit before your current one expires, then you can usually stay while the decision is pending.
- Keep copies of your degree certificate, employment contract and salary details.
- Your job should match your qualification, otherwise the Blue Card or skilled worker permit may be refused.
- Improving your German speeds up permanent residence and helps in daily life.
